Prison and Tents

The prison in Haiti was probably my favorite part of the trip; the hardest part, but the best. One thing Sister Bonite loves to do when she has the money is to buy chicken and cook for the prisoners of Jacmel. Most of the people in Haiti only eat meat a couple times a year, the prisoners are not that fortunate. Everyday they get a mug full of corn meal. That is their breakfast lunch and dinner. They do not get their mugs washed either. Sister Bonite has been trying to get some tin bowls for them to have in their cells but hasn't gotten that yet. It cost about $250 to feed the prisoners this meal so she only gets to do it about once a month (because she feeds the children everyday). We jumped at the opportunity to go when she told us about it. She cooked each prisoner one chicken leg and they got a to-go box full of rice and beans. Those are some of the rice and beans. These people really love it when Sister Bonite comes. After she feeds them she goes to each cell and talks to them about Jesus and prays with them, many prisoners have come to know Christ through this. After she went by the cells we started singing to them. The presence of God in that place as we sang "Amazing Grace" to them was indescribable. I'll spare the details of the smells and grossness. It was sad to see how these people had to live, but wonderful to show love to them.
I did not get many pictures of the prison because we were not allowed to take the cameras inside the prison, only outside was I able to take these. There were two halls of cells. After the earthquake the prisoners who escaped either were shot or captured and put into these cells. There was about 25 men living in one cell.
Another place we got to experience was a tent city. This is where an organization has set up many tents in a certain area for refugees. There are about 6-8 families living in each tent.

The children we precious

they loved Phil and hung on to him!

this is part of a family and their side of a tent.
